This article almost sounds apologist in tone, like someone is saying "Look, we're sorry for pushing the hardware narrative all these years. It's not the end-all, be-all of gaming, OK?" and I don't think that's accurate lol. Hardware is far from the only component to gaming that matters but it is a significant chunk of it.

Hmmm 🤔, so are you saying they haven't been pushing the hardware narrative the hardest for years now? What would you say they have pushed harder? Maybe my view of this is too myopic, but I feel like I've almost exclusively seen the push for higher framerate, greater resolution, more power, rtx, dlss, etc, well above anything that deals with mechanics or interactivity. But again, maybe my view is one of those 'forest for the trees' kinda scenario, and I'm full of it. But I can't think of anything that has been pushed harder than hardware for visuals.

They were definitely pushing the powerful hardware narrative but stopped because because of the massive inflation in GPU prices with graphical improvements that don't match it. It also doesn't help that a lot of major games are poorly optimized. All this is making PC gamers appreciate the hardware they already have and lower end hardware.

@R4gn4r0k: Yup that is what I am using. As far as I know it doesn't work on SteamOS. You need Windows.

I just made friends with a guy that owns a Steam Deck OLED in my Networking class. I showed him my Legion Go and we both joked about how we have much more powerful desktops but we choose to play almost everything on our PC handhelds.

Best thing I am loving about my Legion Go right now is that because it runs on Windows I can use Lossless Scaling and their new frame generation tech. I tried it out on Days Gone and at a locked 30fps it looked like 60fps. I only got noticeable artifacts on the bottom of my screen when driving around. Capping games at 48 FPS also is great even without frame generation. The input latency and framerate is smooth enough for games that aren't too fast paced.

The fact that I am also getting way better graphics and performance than any other portable gaming device also makes it easier to deal with not playing the latest games at the highest settings and framerates. As long as the graphics aren't muddy and blurry and the framerate doesn't feel like a slide show I am willing to put up with it.

Finished Tomb Raider: Legend. Finished Resident Evil 2 as Leon. Finished Resident Evil 1 as Jill. Will definitely immediately play RE2 again as Claire.

I spend the most time on my Legion Go. I prefer playing all my games on it now, even the high end ones!

@last_lap: Yeah we would be lucky if we can get PS4/XOne level performance on a Switch 2 since Nintendo is likely going to sell them at a profit just like the Switch. The Nintendo Switch has pretty good 3rd party multiplatform support compared to previous Nintendo consoles. It would suck to lose it just because they can coast on their first party titles.

It did have better support yes, but considering the WiiU was a MASSIVE failure that's not real hard to beat. Not only that but devs have to heavily optimise their engines to get games to run on the Switch.

Nintendo doesn't care about third party devs, but Nintendo has always been a selfish company with a Nintendo only attitude.

The Wii sold lots of consoles but the 3rd party support was abysmal even though lots of developers did try making games for it at first. The Wii's major audience was extremely casual filled with people that don't play games like old people using it for only for exercise. There was barely any 3rd party games that were successful on the Wii other than the Just Dance series.

The Switch is different. The Switch has more best sellers than the Wii and a good amount of them are 3rd party titles that aren't dancing games. The Switch is also a good platform for indie titles it is the only console able to outsell the PC in indie game sales several times. The Switch has gotten way more AA and AAA multiplatform games than any other Nintendo console.

As good as Nintendo IPs are the WiiU has shown that they can't save the console if the device sucks and there aren't other games people want to play. That likely won't happen for a while since Nintendo has been churning out games that sell 5+ million easily.

Where are all the Sony fans in this thread? Nobody but Hardy has come in to offer their thoughts... This underwhelming preview experience must be resonating with them.... Is there no opinions on it?

They hyped this game up but laughed at Wo Long Fallen Dynasty even though they're made by the same developers. They must have thought the only on Playstation logo made it better by default.

@hardwenzen: You are probably right. I am giving Nintendo too much credit to think they would even bother using upscaling tech considering how half assed some of their first party is such as the recent Pokemon titles.

Thank goodness for PC handhelds being a thing now.

All i know is that their next system will be lucky to have the processing power of the 2013 Xbone.

it would be sad if it is weaker than the Steam Deck. The Deck is practically a portable Xbox Series S. That type of graphics on a handheld screen and resolution would easily look really good.

The Switch 2 won't even approach the series X. 800p screen is the maximum resolution i see it having, but a higher chance of it being 720p yet again. And it really doesn't matter because Nintendo fans will damage control for Nintendo, saying all over the place how Mario doesn't need photo realistic visuals, as if quality hardware is used for nothing else but achieving realism🤷‍♂️

The series X is way more powerful you can't fit that type of performance in a handheld without it costing an arm and a leg and the battery lasting 30 minutes at best. it doesn't need to be as powerful as a series X either. It just needs to be powerful enough for games to be scaled down without too much compromise.

If Nvidia is able to fit tensor cores on a Tegra chip for the Switch 2 then I expect 1080/1200p native display. DLSS can help make up for lack of processing power. All this upscaling tech has been a huge game changer in the handheld PC space. FSR 1 doesn't even look as bad on my Legion Go as it would on the average sized PC monitor or TV and we got better upscalers now.

Someone should tell Nintendo fans that cartoony and stylized graphics can look way better with more processing power and that cell shaded games can have textures that aren't. just solid colors, models with simple shapes and lack of lighting.

Look at these shots I took on my Legion Go.
