You know... I'd argue no new users for a little while would be better than whatever is happening on the site right now.....
A site like gamespot will definitely need new users to sustain itself even though at this point it's an established site. Also nothing is stopping the spammers from setting up hundreds maybe even thousands of accounts in the background before new user registration shuts down and then using those accounts to blast the site with spam threads.
Unfortunately this is the case. For most of these spam attacks we obviously have new accounts signing up as part of it, but these kinds of attacks are well-organized and, unfortunately, usually done manually by someone thinking about how to get around roadblocks. They shift IPs frequently, will copy/paste legitimate content to get around our automated spam rules or minimum post restrictions, will create massive amounts of accounts and then simply not post on them for months to get around time limitations, and so on. It's difficult to automate a response when the people on the other end see how you're responding and work around what you're doing, unfortunately.
We're aware of how frustrating this is and continue to work on it, though. Sorry for all the spam!
It's at 3.08 at the moment. And yes, installing up to WOTLK should prevent you from having to patch too much (the big content patches may not be included, though; I'm unsure on that.
If you have a fast connection, you can find all of the downloadable installers for the discs on Blizzard's website. Prevents you from having to switch out nine discs, but it'll take a while to download.
David Foster Wallace wrote Infinite Jest, which at 1100 pages should keep you busy for a while. Plenty of criticism on it, as well. His other novel is The Broom Of The System.
Otherwise I would recommend Raymond Chandler: The Long Goodbye and The Big Sleep.
