It's the same reason that Rihanna is popular, or Batman for guys. A lot of it is that when the skins are fashionable, the girls will always love them. Fashion is important for the girls and gays. Another thing is self-projection. It's why Batman from the cartoons is such a beloved character, especially for the memelords. Batman was attractive, masculine, charismatic, wealthy, etc. Guys can easily self-project onto Batman. It's the same for Goku as well. Goku had a lot of dudes attempting to go Super Saiyan, and the reason is that they fantasized about being as powerful as Goku. It's the same for girls and gays. No matter what, everyone has a fantasy.

Tbh, the woman that made this a thing just should not have talked about it. No one actually gave AF about this game, until she talked about it. "All press is good press", which means that this game got an audience fostered by her negativity. It likely would've been a forgotten about flop, had she not have talked about it.

Completely disagree with people who say "it doesn't matter" though, it's a visual medium. If didn't care about what I was looking at, play tabletop stuff. And even then those tend not to skimp on visual effort.

Like animation, Dragonball Super looks like shit in the early episodes, after a concentrated effort the latter half of the show dramatically improved and thus became more enjoyable because of it. Even if the writing was garbo.

Yeah, of course it matters somewhat. Everyone has preferences. It's just that the game being fun is a million times more important, making how the character looks silly to care about in comparison. Then we have people who really, really care about how characters look, and that's just annoying. I simply don't care that a game like Stellar Blade went with sexy jiggly female. I only care in that I do not mind, I like jiggly females. Would they have gone with something ugly, I wouldn't mind either. Wario is fun. Returnal grandma looks all right. I don't think I'd enjoy Returnal any more or less with a sexy supermodel protag, aka "I don't care".

I've been looking at that RE boardgame too, I want it. No idea how you play it, but it looks cool. Think I'll download it for Tabletop Simulator on Steam and try it out.

All it does is lead to blind tribalism where people will just blindly follow whatever their own camp says and have a knee-jerk reaction to anything from the opposing camp. Graphically, DF must smoking so high quality grass to say that it looks good. Haven't seen Ghostbusters, but that's a good point about Little Mermaid. I haven't seen the movie, but it's clearly aimed at little girls, so why should 30-40 year-old dudes even care about that movie? If you're not the target audience, then it's not your concern what little girls are watching, unless you're a parent worried about inappropriate content. The "anti-woke" crowd were throwing a hissy fit over something that doesn't impact them in any way...

However, the reality is that Little Mermaid did flop at the box office. Disney were banking on black audiences to come out in large numbers like they did for Black Panther, yet they didn't for Little Mermaid. The difference is that T'Challa is an original black character, whereas Ariel is an original white character played by a black actress. Most black audiences would much rather go watch an original black character rather than a "black-washed" white character.

I mentioned before the movie came out that they should've just called her a different name instead of Ariel. Maybe it could've been written as a sequel or spin-off with a new black protagonist and maybe have Ariel in a cameo or support role, like what they did with the Spider-Verse movies (the best Spidey movies ever, IMO). That would've generated much more interest from black audiences as well as non-black audiences. That's where Disney really messed up.

It brings joy to my heart to see all the ugly, rainbow-haired freaks cry and moan over video game characters that are way more attractive than they are. Yes, let's make them all ugly so those weirdos can feel better about themselves.

I'm glad the old character were hardly in it. They're old, then the movie becomes a homage and becomes built around them, and becomes kind of corny. Also, now everything has a multiverse it's not necessary. I didn't go in with any expectations, so I ended up liking it.

As for The Little Mermaid, I saw A LOT of backlash and the majority of that was not from black youtubers. I saw SO many "how dare they" comments from white people more than black people. They. Were. MAD.

You need to be specific. If you mean Star Wars for example, it's because they regurgitated the original storylines, made them worse, and threw out everything that was previously established. Although Rogue One is one of the best Star Wars films I've seen.

Most of the time Disney films don't do well is because they aren't as good as they could have been, like Eternals.

The other problem is these days, everything the right wingers don't like they claim wokism is the reason. When half the time, it's just not a good product. Then they start blaming wokism for things that is actually from their side. For example Batman being shot in Suicide Squad, when the influence for this kind of crap is more likely coming from The Boyz, which is the least woke thing there is. Like when they blamed wokism for Superman getting SA'd. Nah, that edgy crap is from the other side. When you show Marvel and DC, The Boyz and Invicible is popular, they're going to incorperate more of that stuff.

Wokism in comics would be the golden age or something, when there's always a happy ending and a lesson for the kids.

Standards just aren't the same these days. Sexy people are not realistic anymore when more people are getting fat and diabetic. We need to get with the times and make more fat characters that struggle with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

We really need to do something about sexy people and those that Simp for sex-appeal. Those people are wrong and deserve to be stuffed on a one-way rocket ship to Mars.

@Jag85: It probably was an unwise move by Disney. But the backlash was annoying like these guys were looking for something to be mad about. My thing was, "why, were you excited about it up until this happened?" :-S.

So eager to take ownership, they don't even know the horrific original version of the tale. There's this YouTuber Jon Solo, he does a series of videos called "messed up origins", check it out. They're pretty good.
